Ledge

We drove through Niagara, Wisconsin today. Niagara is just southeast of Iron Mountain , Michigan. When we come home through Niagara, I always enjoy the view of the Niagara Escarpment,,, More commonly known to me as "the ledge"
It's amazing to me that this geological formation, is the same one that is so near to my home in southeastern Wisconsin. Just a few miles from my home is " Ledge Park" near Horicon. The escarpment is underground in places, and above in others. This limestone ledge is also easy to see near my parents farm, south of Neosho.

A short definition of the Niagara Escarpment in Wisconsin is: “a discontinuous bedrock-controlled, geomorphologic feature composed of any and all outcrops that form a rock ridge or series of ridges at the bedrock surface along the ‘western’ edge of the Silurian (‘Niagaran’) outcrop belt.” (J. Kluessendorf & D. Mikulic, 2000).

In geology, an escarpment is a transition zone between different physiogeographic provinces that involves an elevation differential, often involving high cliffs. Most commonly, an escarpment, is a transition from one series of sedimentary rocks to another series of a different age and composition. In such cases, the escarpment usually represents the line of erosional loss of the newer rock over the older.

For more information about the Niagara Escarpment, this is a good site, with nice photos.

Joe was born and lived in Niagra for the first few years of his life. Kimberly Clark had a mill there in those days. It sure is a beautiful area isn't it? I wish I could have seen it with you!

Very cool....Papa just told me the escarpment starts at "the Lime ledge" just on EE and ends at Niagara Falls....I have recently been to both places....I had no idea. That map was so interesting...MB

Have you ever seen the book, The Geology of Wisconsin? I have a copy if you are interested in looking at it. It is very interesting-Wisconsin is such a beautiful state!
